St. Bernardine of Siena: The Apostle of Italy
Discover the life of Saint Bernardine of Siena. He was born in Massa in 1380. He was predicted as the successor to Saint Vincent Ferrer. Bernardine later joined the Franciscan Friars Minor. He showed immense charity during the Siena plague of 1400. He became renowned as an apostle around 1418 or 1420. His voice was miraculously cured to facilitate his preaching ministry. He refused multiple offers to become a bishop.
Bernardine tirelessly attacked the vices of Italy. He preached strongly against gambling and usury. He denounced the luxury and vanity in women’s dress. He fiercely combatted the destructive factional hatreds like the Guelphs and Ghibellines. His central devotion was the Holy Name of Jesus. He held up a tablet displaying the name IHS. This practice caused him to face accusations of heresy. He was ultimately exonerated and praised by the Pope.
