Every Sunday for months now we’ve been going through 10 chapters of the Bible.
For each, I read all 10 chapters, all 10 chapter footnotes, go watch Catholic Bible studies in Youtube, listen to Catholic experts on controversial verses.
This way we finish the whole Bible in under 3 years.
My audience are my children.
Some of them are teens — hence they get very rowdy and out of topic.
And yes, they talk over each other.
When you call one child, the other one answers – completely – instead.
So yes, it’s a great test of a) teaching skills b) patience.
But I’m getting there. Slowly.
Question: Do you want access to my Bible Study materials?
Recently, I’ve had one kid “Create” for us videos for the Weekly Bible Study.
Challenging but he’s done it for a few weeks.
So we “kinda” have a custom movie to watch – for each Sunday.
You’d expect that his videos are are a “retelling” of the Bible story, right?
Not exactly. It’s also a Bible Study with the Church Fathers.
Who are the Church Fathers?
Most people think this is history:
Jesus —> Apostles —> Their local pastor.
Can you tell me what’s missing?
2,000 years actually.
Reality:
Jesus —> Apostles —> 2,000 years of Christianity —>Their local pastor.
The Church Fathers are from
Apostles —> 700AD (Ending with John of Damascus)
Apostolic Fathers.
Who are they?
They’re the humans that the Apostles directly “laid hands” and said “You take over.”
Some of them are in the New Testament:
Clement of Rome
Mark and Luke (*they made the Gospels)
Timothy and Titus.
The non-NT (new testament) famous ones are both Apostle John’s disciples: Ignatius of Antioch and Polycarp
TEN VIDEOS?
Going back, my kid made TEN videos or so per Sunday.
Over, right?
That’s what I said It’s like we have a movie per Sunday.
Eventually, we’ll put those videos on Youtube.
What do you say, wanna see them?
They’re designed so YOU will watch them with your family.
And when I say YOU – I mean you -head of your household.
A TWIST
Now, because we homeschool here, the videos also serve another purpose.
Language learning.
The Catholic Bible Study videos are in Taglish.
So:
1. Non-fluent kids are gently exposed to Filipino material with visuals.
- Non-fluent kids can now understand their faith in 2 languages
- Non-fluent kids can prep for the dreaded Pilipino exams as early as possible.
- Parents can define words while they’re watching together.
- Hence, not permitting parents to “leave their kids with the video” so they can “watch alone” while the parent does other things.
This is ideal for Sunday.
WHY SUNDAY
On Monday, we didn’t get enough rest – we say and we feel.
You know why?
Because we didn’t use the Sunday properly.
Did you mall after mass?
Why?
You’re not supposed to do that. You’re to rest.
Every one in the family.
Did the kids game all Sunday?
Is that rest?
Sunday is practice for heaven.
HOW?
Spend 1 hour in front of Jesus in silence w/o verbal prayers.
That’s a good goal in Sunday.
Close your eyes, just be with Jesus on Sunday.
Catholics do it inside an Adoration Chapel.
If you’re near one, you’ve been extra blessed.
It doesn’t exist everywhere.
But you can do this 1 hour silence at Church.
Yes, not lying down in bed.
BIBLE? PRAY?
Bible reading on Sunday?
Sure, but don’t forget the scene at Gethsemane where Jesus asked “The Three “Will you not read the Bible with me for one hour?”
He didn’t say that.
He didn’t say that.
He didn’t say that.
He said WATCH and PRAY.
One hour on Sunday.
STUDY
Now let’s add Bible Study.
That’s what we do and why I prepare -also on Sunday.
Sleeping is also great on Sunday.
Do that too.
It’s your turn to INCREASE!
