Q: Doing the Social Media for Church. Tips? Pitfalls?

‘ve been asked to assist with social media posting for my church, to take some of the burden off the PCC and reach people who may not know we exist. So far, this involves a Facebook page, although may branch out into other platforms. We’re a traditional Anglo-Catholic church in Yorkshire, England.

Any tips? Pitfalls to avoid? (I get the feel we’re going for dignified and respectful, so I’ll keep my spicy memes and theological hot takes to myself)

Some tips that worked for us:

  • Consistency beats complexity — One well-made post per week goes further than 5 rushed ones.
  • Use templates — We use Canva Pro for Teams so all our Sunday readings, saint quotes, and livestream promo posts follow a clean, branded style. Really helps people recognize us in their feed.
  • Assign roles — If others might help you later, a team Canva setup lets each person log in with their own account but still access the same media and templates. Keeps things tidy.
  • Watch the tone — Dignified and reverent posts actually perform well, especially if paired with beautiful visuals. We try to keep things calm, hopeful, and prayerful.

Pitfalls to avoid:

  • Over-explaining theology in posts — Save the deep stuff for homilies or blog links.
  • Using blurry or poorly cropped images — Invest in clear visuals, or again, grab from Canva’s huge image library (bonus: they even have Filipino church-style art which I love).
  • Forgetting mobile users — Most folks see the posts on phones. Keep text short and images high contrast.
