If you’re going around the Jubilee churches and wondering – what is this for?

Or you may be accompanied by a friend or driver who doesn’t “GET IT”.

Here’s a conversation you can talk to them about – during the times between the pilgrimage.

It uses LOGIC and will not offend anyone.

Introducing Pascal’s Wager:

Pascal’s Wager is an idea from the 17th century by Catholic mathematician Blaise Pascal.
In a letter, he was trying to prove what will happen if God exists or not.

Here’s how he explained it:

  1. You Have Two Choices:
    • Believe in God: This means you think God is real and you follow the rules or teachings that come with believing in God.
    • Don’t Believe in God: This means you don’t think God is real, so you might not follow those rules or teachings.
  2. Now, Think About What Happens After You Die:
    • If God Exists:
      • If you believe in God, you might go to a good place (like heaven) after you die.
      • If you don’t believe in God, you might not go to that good place.
    • If God Doesn’t Exist:
      • If you believe in God, nothing bad happens to you after you die (you just stop existing).
      • If you don’t believe in God, nothing bad happens to you either (you just stop existing).

Pascal’s Idea

Pascal said that if you believe in God and God doesn’t exist, you won’t lose anything important. But if you don’t believe in God and God does exist, you might miss out on something very good (like going to heaven).

So, Pascal thought it was a safer bet to believe in God because if God does exist, you’ll be happy you did. And if God doesn’t exist, it won’t hurt you to have believed.

A Simple Example

Imagine you’re on a hike and you come to a river. You want to get to the other side, but you’re not sure if the water is deep or if there’s a shallow spot where you can cross safely. You have two choices:

  1. Wear a Life Jacket: This way, if the water is deep, you’ll be safe.
  2. Don’t Wear a Life Jacket: If the water is shallow, you’ll be fine. But if it’s deep, you might get into trouble.

In this situation, wearing a life jacket is like believing in God. If you wear it and the water is shallow, nothing bad happens (you just get a little wet, but you’re safe). But if you don’t wear it and the water is deep, you could be in danger.

Similarly, Pascal said that believing in God is like wearing the life jacket. If God exists, believing in God might help you get to a good place after you die (like heaven). And if God doesn’t exist, believing won’t hurt you. But if you don’t believe and God does exist, you might miss out on something important.

So, in both cases, it’s safer to take the precaution (wear the life jacket or believe in God) just in case.

What does “Believe” Mean anyway, for the Catholic?

For the Jubilee Catholic, this means:
1) Reading more about God, Spiritual Reading they called it. You can start here: https://amzn.to/3XKbueB
2) Doing what God wants based on what you read.
3) If reading is confusing or you’re Gaston from Beauty and Beast (you only like pictures) – you talk to a priest to explain what you’re reading in #1
4) You also read the Bible: https://amzn.to/4iCxsYY
5) You say your prayers using a prayer book, like this one: https://amzn.to/41WtTYa
6) Pray for the Dead, like here: https://amzn.to/4hq3hmP
7) Generally love people, seek confession at church, follow church practices and go back to #1 – #3 to seek explanations.
